Dan Hanes is a professional engineer with an extensive background the design of marine systems. He received a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from Duke University and started his career working in offshore energy for Schlumberger Offshore Services in the Gulf of Mexico. In his spare time, he rebuilt a 46’ classic sailing yacht in his backyard. Dan later worked for PPG as an instrumentation and controls engineer, and as a manager at Motorola doing automation and robotics development. Drawn by his lifelong passion for ships, Dan started Sea3 Systems where he has completed numerous marine projects, including computers and control systems for Navy submarines, advanced navigation software, oceanographic equipment, and electric propulsion systems. Dan is a member of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, a regional VP of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and Chair of the SNAME Electric Propulsion and Controls panel.
